RECALL CAMPAIGN 2007040005 - CHECK ENGINE CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE AND UPDATE AS REQUIRED

SUBJECT

MODEL YEAR 2007 

CHECK ENGINE CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE AND UPDATE AS REQUIRED 

This Recall Campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that on affected vehicles the software for the engine control module may need to be updated regarding fuel type for Flex Fuel Vehicles. Vehicles without the engine control module software update that are filled only with E85 fuel may experience starting problems, rough vehicle operation and "Check Engine" lamp illumination. Dealers will update the engine control module software as required.

Prior to performing this Recall Campaign:

• Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously repaired.
  NOTE: Do not perform Recall Campaign P-RC-2007040006 in addition to or in place of this Recall Campaign.
• Please review the entire Recall Campaign bulletin and follow the procedure steps exactly as described.

Attached is a sample copy of a letter which owners of the affected vehicles will receive.

Approximately 11,934 vehicles are affected.

PROCEDURE

Note - Prior to starting the procedure ensure to: 

• Use DAS version 04/2007 or higher with all associated patches
• Follow the steps exactly as described in DAS
• Connect battery charger

1. Connect Star Diagnosis.
2. Check engine control module software.
   • Follow the DAS path "Control unit adaptations/ Control unit programming" and on-screen instructions.
   NOTE: In rare cases DAS may not recognize the engine control module software. If the window shown in Fig 1 opens, choose "Ethanol fuel engine: FITTED" and select 'F2'.

3. Perform one of the following:
   • If newer software is  available: Install software, then proceed to step 4.
   • If newer software is not  available: Disconnect Star Diagnosis and battery charger; proceed to step 7.
4. Perform SCN/CVN coding of control module.
   • Follow the DAS path "Control unit adaptations/ Variant coding/ SCN coding" and on-screen instructions.
5. Read out and erase fault memory.
6. Disconnect Star Diagnosis and battery charger.
7. Fill out Repair Label and affix on underside of hood next to existing emissions labels (as shown in Fig 2).
   NOTE:

   • Ensure the surface is clean prior to affixing the label.
   • Use a ball point pen to fill in the label; do not  use a marker or felt tip pen.
   • The label is being mailed to dealers prior to the launch of this Recall Campaign. Additional labels are available as literature through NetStar free of charge (order# P-BQ-AEM-LBL).

   NOTE: Step 8 is to be performed by California dealers only  !
8. Print Proof of Correction form (Fig 5) and fill out as shown in Fig 3.
   NOTE: The Proof of Correction form can also be found on STAR TekInfo under the "Forms and Test Sheets > Other Forms" heading.
   • Scan form and keep a copy for dealer records.
   • Hand form to customer or place in glove box.
