CHECK ENGINE CONTROL UNIT SOFTWARE AND UPDATE IF NECESSARY

SERVICE INFORMATION

This Service Campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that on the affected vehicles (see VIN range below) the engine control unit software may lead to rough shifting. Dealer will check the engine control unit software version and install an updated version of the engine control unit software if necessary.

Please review the Effective Serial Number chart located below, and if necessary, repair the subject vehicles during the vehicle's next service.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:

Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired.
Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin.

Approximately 5,068 vehicles are affected.

NOTE: Every vehicle in the VIN range may not be included in the campaign. VMI must always be checked before performing campaigns to verify that the campaign is required on a specific vehicle. VMI always overrides the bulletin in reference to a specific vehicle's inclusion in a particular campaign. Please also note that Recall and Service Campaigns do not expire and may also be performed on a vehicle with a vehicle status indicator.

PROCEDURE

Connect Star Diagnosis.
- Ensure to use DAS version 04/06 or higher.
- Connect battery charger to ensure vehicle power is > 12.5 volts.
- Ensure to follow DAS steps exactly as described.
Check version of engine control unit software; follow the following DAS path: "Control units/ Drive/ ME 9.7 - Motor electronics 9.7/ Control unit adaptation/ Control module programming/ Hard disk".
- If the message "Newer control unit software found" appears: Install new software and proceed to step 3.
- If a newer version of the software is not available: Proceed to step 3.
CAUTION: If SDS is disconnected during the programming, the control unit will not be operational and will need to be reprogrammed.
Select "Variant coding/ SCN Coding" and follow on-screen steps to perform SCN coding; refer to latest versions of S-B- 58.00/144 for Online SCN coding or S-B- 07.61/38 for Office SCN coding .
NOTE:
SCN coding will modify the following parameters:
- Model 211: Rear axle ratio will be modified to 3.07.
- Model 221: Dynamic wheel circumference will be modified to 2150.
To check these parameters after the coding, return to the "SCN Coding" screen and select "Coding" under the "Display of coding data" heading, then scroll down to the appropriate code and value.
Disconnect Star Diagnosis.

NOTE: The following allowable labor operation should be used when submitting a warranty claim for this repair:
