Steering Column: Notes

CAUTION: Applying excessive pressure, or causing impact to mainshaft during service may, cause the column to collapse. Removal
  1. Remove air cleaner. Unbolt steering shaft-to-gear box clamp bolt. If vehicle is equipped with A/C, this should be performed from underneath vehicle. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in this section.
  2. On Montero and 4WD Pickup, slide lower shaft boot up. Remove joint assembly-to-gear box clamp bolt. Disconnect joint assembly from steering shaft.
  3. On all models, remove steering wheel. Loosen tilt lock lever or knob. Lower column. Remove column cover and floor dust cover.
  4. Disconnect column switch connectors, leaving clamps intact. Pull out switch toward shaft end. On Starion, remove column. On Pickup, remove tilt bracket. Remove column.
