Anti-Lock Brake System: Description

CAUTION: See the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
NOTE: For more information on brake system, see the DISC & DRUM - PICKUP article.

The Rear Wheel Anti-Lock (RWAL) brake system is designed to control braking force of rear wheels. This serves to eliminate wheel lock and maintain directional stability during hard brake application. System consists of a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), modulator valve, "G" sensor, RWAL Electronic Control Unit (ECU), ANTI-LOCK warning light and connecting wiring harness. See the COMPONENT LOCATIONS  table under COMPONENT LOCATIONS.

Constant power is supplied to RWAL ECU terminal No. 1 through fuse No. 1. Ignition power is supplied to RWAL ECU through fuse No. 20 when ignition switch is in ON position. Ignition power is supplied to the ANTI-LOCK warning light through fuse No. 7 when ignition switch is in ON position.

System also has a self-diagnostic function, which enables technician to quickly trouble shoot system by monitoring stored RWAL Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING DTCS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
