Test A: Communication With Scan Tool Not Possible

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Attempt to contact MFI system with scan tool. If communication with MFI system is not possible, or a DTC other than MFI P1610, perform appropriate action. See SELF DIAGNOSTICS - MONTERO article under ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If communication with MFI system is possible and no MFI DTCs are set, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Backprobe immobilizer-ECU harness connector D-121 and measure voltage between terminal No. 7 (Red wire) and ground. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage is present, go to step  5 . If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
  3. Inspect immobilizer-ECU connector D-121 for corroded or damaged terminals. Repair connector as necessary, then retest system for normal operation. if connectors are undamaged and problem still exists, go to next step.
  4. Check red wire between immobilizer-ECU connector D-121 and MFI relay B-22X. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check all connectors for corroded or damaged terminals. Repair wiring as necessary, then retest system for normal operation
  5. Measure resistance between immobilizer-ECU connector D-121 terminal No. 3 (Black wire) and ground by backprobing connector. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 2 ohms, go to step  7 .
  6. Check wiring between immobilizer-ECU and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check wires for open or short circuits. Repair wiring as necessary.
  7. Check wiring and connectors between immobilizer-ECU connector D-121 and PCM connector D-110. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check wiring for open and short circuits, check connectors for corroded and damaged terminals. Repair as necessary, then retest system for normal operation. If wiring is okay and problem still exists, replace immobilizer-ECU. See IMMOBILIZER-ECU  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
