GROUP 00 - General

IMPORTANCE OF FREEZE FRAME DATA (FFD)  - All Models and Years.

Many times, technicians will open Techline cases for assistance with repairs related to system failures that include various Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). For most conditions like this the technician must understand that a critical element of diagnosing the concern is to know when the condition occurred and what the operating conditions were when the failure took place. One of the most important ways that Techline and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation can help with additional diagnosis and further investigation of the condition is through Freeze Frame Data (FFD). For future cases please make sure to refer to the appropriate group/section in the service manual for available FFD and make sure all FFD is recorded prior to erasing any DTCs. Thank you for your cooperation in advance.

TIN-18-00-005: PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION REMINDER  - All 2018 Models.

TIN-18-00-005 was released recently and states:

"Customer satisfaction is a key component to our future success and especially critical when delivering a new vehicle. The Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) processes were developed to support dealers to ensure a "fault-free" delivery. During PDI of any new vehicle, it is very important to find any issue that might affect our customer's perception of initial quality and their overall satisfaction with the vehicle.

In the field, there have been customer concerns shortly after delivery about the vehicle having steering wheel off-center, pulling to one side, and directional drift to one side. Therefore, MMNA would like to emphasize to all dealers to check and address these issues prior to the delivery of the vehicle.

In the PDI bulletins, TSB-17-00-002 (2018 MY) and TSB-17-00-012 (2018 Outlander PHEV), a step in the Road Test section emphasizes "Steering operation and wheel alignment." Please check to make sure the steering wheel is centered when the vehicle is traveling straight ahead. The vehicle should track straight on a level surface, without pulling or drifting. Steering wheel alignment is easily identified by the customer because of the "three diamonds" in the middle of the steering wheel.

Addressing these items will have a positive impact on the customer's perception of the quality of their new Mitsubishi vehicle.

Please refer to the labor operation code table below to submit correct claims."

EXHAUST NOISE - FRONT PIPE SEAL RING  - 2013-15 Outlander Sport/RVR.

In most cases, exhaust noise from the front pipe exhaust seal ring does not require the replacement of the front pipe. Replace only the seal ring and additional attachment parts as needed.

GROUP 23 - Automatic Transmission

CVT WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF P (PARK) POSITION  - 2013-15 Outlander Sport/RVR.

If the customer cannot shift the vehicle out of the Park position, even intermittently, refer to Group 52A, Floor Console Assembly, and perform the following procedure before replacing the shifter.

Remove the RH console side panel. While watching the movement of the shift lock solenoid, have someone apply the brake pedal with the ignition ON to determine if the solenoid retracts. If the solenoid does not retract or retracts slowly, it may be due to foreign material, identified as a sugary drink (e.g., Cola) residue built up in the solenoid plunger bore and on the solenoid plunger.

This prevents the solenoid from retracting and the shifter cannot be moved from Park.

Remove the solenoid for cleaning as follows:

G11963239
  • Remove the solenoid from the shifter assembly by GENTLY releasing TAB 1.
  • Carefully wedge a small screwdriver into the channel of TAB 2 to release the lower locking tab.
  • Remove the solenoid by pulling it straight out.
  • Unplug the electrical connector.
  • Remove the spring and plunger and clean them with soap and water.
  • Dampen a wet paper towel or lint-free rag with water and insert it into the bore of the solenoid to clean it.
  • Reattach the electrical connector and re-install the solenoid to the shifter in reverse order of removal.
  • Confirm solenoid and shifter operation and reinstall the console side panel.

Repairs as a result of this type of contamination cannot be claimed under warranty.

TIN-18-23-002: COOLANT LEAKING FROM HOSES AT CVT7 FLUID COOLER  - 2014-18 Mirage, 2017-18 Mirage G4.

TIN-18-23-002 was released recently and states:

"Dealers have reported coolant leaking from the transmission cooler line hoses at the CVT7 fluid cooler (see photo below). Normal dealer repairs have been to replace the hoses and/or clamps at the affected area.

G11963240

In order to investigate this condition further, MMNA is looking to collect 5 complete sets of CVT7 fluid coolers with the hoses and clamps undisturbed  . Please do not remove the hose clamps indicated by the circled areas in the photo below. This is important since MMC needs to perform a duplication test to confirm the area of leakage.

G11963241

Please open a Techline case, attach photos of the condition, and contact Techline (800-446-6064) to review the findings. Product Support will then contact the dealership to arrange return of the original parts to MMNA."

LOOSE SUN VISOR SAMPLING THROUGH END OF MAY, 2018  - 2016 Outlander Sport/RVR.

If you are working on a vehicle with a complaint of loose sun visor screws, from now until 5/31/2018: replace the whole sun visor and the screws instead of tightening/replacing just the screws. MMC would like to obtain sun visors exhibiting this condition for investigation. In case the sun visor is not available within a reasonable amount of time, proceed with a regular repair (screw tightening/replacement).

RIGHT HAND TAILLIGHT AND FRONT MARKER LIGHTS NOT ILLUMINATED  - 2011 and newer Outlander Sport/RVR.

NOTE: This article has been updated since its initial publication in Tech Talk 225, November 2016.

If diagnosing a RH taillight, RH front marker light (part of the headlight assembly), or a glove box light for "not illuminating," check for DTC B16A7 in ETACS set by a possible bulb shorting to ground. This condition can cause the other lights on the circuit to not illuminate or intermittently not illuminate. Do not replace the taillight until the other circuit bulbs are confirmed to be functioning properly. This circuit also affects the DRL (Daytime Running Light) on the 2015 Outlander Sport/RVR. Please record the DTCs on the warranty claim.

DEW CONDENSATION IN HEADLIGHTS & TAILLIGHTS  - All Models.

To address complaints of moisture in the headlights, taillights, or rear combination lamps in Eclipse Cross models, please refer to TSB-15-54-005. This TSB explains the condition and applies to all models.

ACCIDENTAL INTERCHANGE OF CONNECTORS C-146 & C-239 (FCM ON/OFF & HEADLIGHT LEVEL SWITCHES)  - 2018 Eclipse Cross.

Connectors C-146 and C-239 are both 10-pin gray connectors at the left side of the instrument panel. These connectors can be inadvertently swapped, causing the following symptoms:

  • Headlight level will not adjust
  • FCM On/Off switch function is unresponsive
  • Headlight level switch does not illuminate when lights are on
  • FCM switch is illuminated very dim with ignition On
  • When lights are on and FCM switch is depressed, the illumination of all switches gets dimmer

No warning lights or DTCs have been noted when this condition occurs.

Refer to the following diagram and photos for correct connection locations. Note that the headlight leveling switch harness has yellow tape, while the FCM harness has black tape.

DEALER LETTER: AIR CONDITIONING REFRIGERANT PURCHASE/R1234YF REFRIGERANT  - All models.

A Dealer Letter was recently sent to all dealers and states:

"In December of 2017 Mitsubishi released the ALL NEW Outlander PHEV. This new vehicle is loaded with advanced technology such as a new environmentally friendly air conditioning refrigerant, R1234YF. Even though this refrigerant is more environmentally friendly than its predecessor, R134A, it may include other elements that require caution when handling the refrigerant. Therefore, the Environmental Protection Agency Clean Air Act, section 609, mandates dealers who order R1234YF (part# A998ZC1X07) to provide proof of certification for handling refrigerant. In addition, this requirement also applies to future orders of refrigerant R134A (part# A998ZC1X08).

A dealer must provide proof of technician refrigerant handling certification and submit via email to:

MitsubishiPartsAndAccessory@mmsa.com

NOTE: There are two avenues for a technician to achieve refrigerant handling certification, through ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) at www.ase.com  or MACS (Mobile Air Conditioning Society) at www.macsw.org

The following process will occur when part# A998ZC1X07 or A998ZC1X08 is needed:

  • Dealer places their order
  • MMNA verifies a valid certification is on file (if no valid certification can be verified the order will be cancelled)
  • MMNA will release the dealer's order

For more information regarding the EPA's Clean Air Act, Section 609 go to: www.epa.gov"

ATIN-18-SR-001-B: DRIVE BELT AUTO TENSIONER SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN  - Certain 2009-12 Lancer, 2010-12 Lancer Sportback, 2008-12 Outlander, 2011-12 Outlander Sport/RVR.

ATIN-18-SR-001-B was released recently and states:

"A recall campaign will be released today for the drive belt auto tensioner on certain 2008-2012 Outlander built from June 25, 2008 to November 16, 2011; 2011-2012 Outlander Sport built from August 26, 2010 to December 15, 2011; 2009-2012 Lancer built from March 20, 2008 to November 17, 2011; and 2010-2012 Lancer Sportback built from June 17, 2009 to November 15, 2011. The Recall Bulletin outlining the repair procedure will be available today on MEDIC and MDL.

The flange of the drive belt automatic tensioner may crack, causing detachment of the drive belt. If the drive belt detaches, the alternator will not charge the battery, causing an engine stall, and/or the power steering assist will be disabled, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers are requested to inspect the drive belt auto tensioner, and if a countermeasure part is determined to not have already been installed, the dealer is to proceed with replacement of the drive belt auto tensioner with a countermeasure unit.

Notification letters will be mailed, today, March 27, 2018, to owners of affected vehicles, requesting they contact their local Authorized Mitsubishi dealership to schedule an appointment to have this recall performed. Some vehicles are also affected by SR-18-003 "Sunroof" or SR-18-004 "Outlander Sport Windshield Wiper Link" campaign. Sample copies of the letters are included in the Recall Bulletin for your reference.

Some dealers may be force allocated stock of parts necessary to complete this recall using a formula based on the proximity and percentage of applicable registered VINs by ZIP code. Parts shipments will be processed via the 'R' order type and will start shipping along with your scheduled stock order beginning March 28, 2018. Dealers may place additional orders via the MDL. Please refer to Parts Bulletin TN-OL-01-18 for additional information.

Affected new vehicle inventory VINs can be reviewed on the Mitsubishi Dealer Link in the Most Recent: Open Campaign List available under the service section of "e-reports." Dealers must review the Warranty Superscreen to confirm if any vehicles in their new or used vehicle inventories are affected, and conduct this campaign prior to delivering them. When checking for applicability of this campaign (C1801R), please check for and complete any other open campaign. Always obtain the customer's approval before completing a campaign on a customer owned vehicle."

IMPORTANT: Affected new or used inventory vehicles must be repaired before the vehicle is sold/delivered. Dealers must check their inventory vehicles' VINs on the Warranty Superscreen to verify whether the vehicle is involved in this recall campaign. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell/deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by the notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.

ATIN-18-SR-002-B: PARKING BRAKE CORROSION SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN  - Certain 2014-16 Outlander, 2013-16 Outlander Sport/RVR.

ATIN-18-SR-002-B was released recently and states:

"A recall campaign will be released today for the parking brake on certain 2014-2016 Outlander built from April 12, 2013 to February 2, 2016 and 2013-2016 Outlander Sport built from July 20, 2012 to July 8, 2016. The Recall Bulletin outlining the repair procedure will be available today on MEDIC and MDL.

Water may enter the rear brake calipers causing the parking brake operating shafts to corrode and possibly bind. If the parking brake operating shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.

There are many different repair scenarios for this campaign. Dealers are requested to follow the appropriate Recall Bulletin workflow to inspect, and if necessary, repair or replace the brake caliper assembly.

Notification letters will be mailed today, March 27, 2018, to owners of affected vehicles, requesting they contact their local Authorized Mitsubishi dealership to schedule an appointment to have this recall performed. Two different letters are being mailed, depending on whether the vehicle is also affected by SR-18-004 "Outlander Sport Windshield Wiper Link" campaign. Sample copies of the letters are included in the Recall Bulletin for your reference.

Some dealers may be force allocated stock of parts necessary to complete this recall using a formula based on the proximity and percentage of applicable registered VINs by ZIP code. Parts shipments will be processed via the 'R' order type and will start shipping along with your scheduled stock order beginning April 2, 2018. Dealers may place additional orders via the MDL. Please refer to Parts Bulletin BR-OU-01-18 for additional information.

When checking for applicability of this campaign (C1802Z, C1803R, C1802X, C1803X), please check for and complete any other open campaign. Always obtain the customer's approval before completing a campaign on a customer owned vehicle.

IMPORTANT: Affected new or used inventory vehicles must be repaired before the vehicle is sold/delivered. Dealers must check their inventory vehicles' VINs on the Warranty Superscreen to verify whether the vehicle is involved in this recall campaign. ATIN-18-SR-003-C: SUNROOF SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN  - Certain 2008-10 Lancer, 2009-10 Lancer Evolution, 2010 Lancer Sportback, 2007-10 Outlander.

ATIN-18-SR-003-C was released recently and states:

"Notification letters for approximately 17,000 vehicles affected by this campaign and SR-18-001 "Drive Belt Auto Tensioner" campaign will be mailed to owners today, March 27, 2018, requesting they contact their local Authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer to schedule an appointment to have these recalls performed. Included below is a sample copy of the customer notification letter for your reference.

Due to an incorrect outer frame material which the sunroof glass is bonded to, the sunroof glass may detach from the sunroof glass assembly. If the sunroof glass detaches while driving, it can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Some dealers may have already been force allocated sunroof assembly stock in February 2018, during the initial notification letter mailing. No further force allocation is planned; however, dealers must review their current inventory and may place additional orders via the MDL to ensure that you have sufficient parts to complete this recall.

When checking for applicability of this campaign (C1804R), please check for and complete any other open campaign. Always obtain the customer's approval before completing a campaign on a customer owned vehicle."

IMPORTANT: Affected new or used inventory vehicles must be repaired before the vehicle is sold/delivered. ATIN-18-SR-004-B: OUTLANDER SPORT WINDSHIELD WIPER LINK SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN  - Certain 2011-16 Outlander Sport/RVR.

ATIN-18-SR-004-B was released recently and states:

"Notification letters will be mailed today, March 27, 2018, to owners of affected vehicles, requesting they contact their local Authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer to schedule an appointment to have this recall performed. Three different letters are being mailed, depending on whether the vehicle is also affected by SR-18-001 "Drive Belt Auto Tensioner" campaign or SR-18-002 "Parking Brake Corrosion" campaign. Sample copies of the letters are included below for your reference.

In the event that water drops down through the back side of the front deck garnish (the body piece between the hood and windshield), the front wiper link ball joint may experience excessive moisture and corrode. If this occurs, the wiper link may separate causing the windshield wipers to stop operating. If the windshield wipers become inoperative it may reduce driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Please refer to Parts Bulletin WL-OU-01-18 for additional information.

ATIN-18-SR-005-A: LANCER PASSENGER SIDE FRONTAL AIR BAG INFLATOR SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN  - Certain 2004-06 Lancer, Lancer Sportback, Lancer Evolution.

ATIN-18-SR-005-A was released recently and states:

"A recall campaign will be released today for the passenger side frontal air bag inflator equipped on certain 2004 - 2006 Lancer vehicles that were repaired pursuant to Safety Recall Campaign SR-14-012 and received a replacement passenger side frontal air bag inflator. The replacement air bag inflator may still be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to explode in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag. The Recall Campaign Bulletin, SR-18-005, outlining the repair procedure will be available today on MEDIC and MDL.

Vehicles equipped with a front passenger Takata air bag inflator containing ammonium nitrate, are at risk of inflator rupture during a collision. An inflator rupture may cause metal fragments to pass through the air bag and into the vehicle interior at high speed, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants.

Dealers are requested to replace the passenger side frontal air bag inflator with a new replacement inflator part that has been sourced from a different supplier. The Part Number for the new replacement air bag inflator is 7030A950.  This is the same new replacement air bag inflator used in SR-17-004.

Notification letters are scheduled to be mailed to approximately 17,000 owners of affected vehicles on April 26, 2018, requesting they contact their local Authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealership to schedule an appointment to have this recall performed. A sample copy of the owner notification letter is included for your reference.

No force allocation of new inflator stock has been planned. However, dealers must review their current inventory and may place additional orders via the MDL to ensure that they have sufficient parts to complete this recall. Please refer to Parts Bulletin AI-LN-01-18 for additional information.

Dealers must review the Warranty Superscreen to confirm if any vehicles in their new or used vehicle inventories are affected, and conduct this campaign prior to delivering them.

When checking for applicability of this campaign (C1807A), please check for and complete any other open campaigns. Always obtain the customer's approval before completing a campaign on a customer owned vehicle.

The replaced inflator must be returned to Takata directly.  Dealers must  follow the return shipping procedure outlined in SR-18-005.

Completion of this recall is an extremely important initiative for MMNA. To support completion of this recall, owners will be informed that a rental/loaner vehicle will be available to them during completion of this recall. Please prioritize this repair in your shop scheduling. To minimize inconveniences for your customers, please ensure every eligible customer is provided with a rental car upon request."

TIN-18-SR-002-C: COUNTERMEASURE PART INSPECTION DURING PARKING BRAKE CORROSION SAFETY RECALL  - Certain 2014-16 Outlander, 2013-16 Outlander Sport/RVR.

TIN-18-SR-002-C was released recently and states:

"Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) would like to remind everyone that the "Confirm Mark" labor ops are applicable only when countermeasure mark(s) are found during the INSPECTION AND IDENTIFYING IMPROVED PARTS  step in SR-18-002. As a reminder, the countermeasure marks are:

  1. Blue paint mark on the hook; or
  2. "G" stamp near the nut.

Any other marks found on the caliper lever are production (or "manufacturing") marks, NOT countermeasure marks.

MMNA would also like to ensure that technicians are correctly identifying the vehicles that do not need a repair performed. Therefore, all inspection-only  claims processed  after 4/23/2018 must include photos of the caliper lever with a countermeasure mark-those photos must be posted to the Photos Required Condition (PRC) system in the "RECALL PHOTO/DOCS SUPPORT" category. The photo must clearly show the countermeasure mark with a legible, hand-written note of the last 8 characters of the VIN.

Customer satisfaction is important to MMNA, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind you to follow the proper flowcharts, and that the proper inspection and repair procedures must be followed to fix the customer's vehicle right the first time.

Please contact your DPSM if you have any questions."
