Section 230 (Rear Driveline Module): Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jeep Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:

Never grasp half shaft assembly by the boots. This may cause the boot to pucker or crease and reduce the service life of the boot.

Avoid over angulating or stroking the C/V joints when handling the half shaft.

Half shafts exposed to battery acid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, differential fluid or gasoline may cause the boots to deteriorate. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage.

CAUTION:

Propeller shaft installation is a two-person operation. Never allow propeller shaft to hang from the center bearing, or while only connected to the transmission or rear axle flanges. A helper is required. If a propeller shaft section is hung unsupported, damage may occur to the shaft, coupler, and center bearing from over-angulation. This may result in driveline vibrations or component failure.

  1. If removed, install the Right Hand (RH) halfshaft into the Rear Drive Unit (RDU). Clean any residual excess grease from RDU output shaft.
    NOTE:

Clean the splined mating surfaces and apply a light grease to the internal splines prior to installing halfshaft.

  2. Install the RH halfshaft shim onto the hub end of the shaft.
  3. Secure the RDU on a suitable jack and secure it with chains.
  4. If service was performed to the RDU and hydraulic fluid needs to be added. Refer to FLUID, DIFFERENTIAL, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  5. Raise the RDU with the RH halfshaft into position.
    NOTE:

There are locating pins on the RDU bracket. Make sure the RDU bracket is in the correct location.
