Glow Plugs
The glow plugs enable the engine to start easily in cold weather and run smoothly during warm-up. The glow plug system uses a glow plug control unit, 2 relays, and a dropping resistor to control glow plug current.
When the ignition is turned on, a dash mounted glow plug indicator light operates for up to 9 seconds. Full battery voltage is applied for 4-12 seconds during pre-glow operation to aid in starting.
There is no pre-glow operation if coolant temperature is above 122°F (50°C). After engine has started, pre-glow relay is turned off. The after-glow circuit continues to supply reduced current to the glow plugs through the dropping resistor. During after-glow, the glow plugs operate for 5 to 32 seconds depending on engine temperature.
Glow plug relay No. 1 is used for pre-glow operation and relay No. 2 is used for after-glow operation. The No. 1 relay is located on left side shock tower, while the No. 2 relay and dropping resistor are on the firewall next to the power brake booster. The temperature sensor is mounted on the right side of engine block. The glow plug control unit is mounted behind the right side kick panel.
