Main Causes Of Overheating
- Turn engine off. Perform the following:
- Check for blocked radiator, condenser, radiator grille and bumper blocking airflow.
- Using coolant tester, check coolant mixture. Mixture should be 50-50.
- Check coolant level.
- Using pressure tester, check radiator cap. Pressure should be 11-14 psi (78-98 kPa).
- Start engine. Run engine at 3000 RPM for 10 minutes. Perform the following:
- Check for coolant leaks.
- Check for thermostat opening by touching upper and lower hoses. Both hoses should be hot.
- On 3.3L models, check cooling fan.
- On all models, turn engine off. Using chemical color tester or 4 gas analyzer, check for combustion gasses in cooling system.
- Drive at 55 MPH for 30 minutes and then let engine idle for 10 minutes. Temperature gauge should remain at less than 3/4 when driving. Ensure coolant does not overflow from reservoir tank.
- Turn engine off. Allow vehicle to cool for one hour. Check for coolant level in reservoir tank to return to initial level.
- If no other problems are found, check cylinder head for warping. Maximum warpage is 0.004" (0.1 mm). Check cylinder walls and pistons for scuffing.
