Test Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Isuzu Rodeo Sport and 2002 Isuzu Rodeo. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The numbers below refer to the step numbers in the diagnostic procedures.

  1. 1

PMC OBD II system check prompts technician to complete some basic checks and store the freeze frame and failure records data on scan tool if applicable. This creates an electronic copy of data taken when fault occurred. The information is then stored on the scan tool for later reference.
  2. 2

Commanding EGR valve OPEN determines whether EGR system can control EGR valve accurately and if the fault if present.
  3. 3

If EGR valve 5-volt reference is shorted to ground, DVOM will read no voltage, an additional DTC will be set and engine performance will be poor. When circuit is open, only DTC P0405 will be set.
  4. 4

Jumping 5-volt reference circuit to signal circuit checks signal circuit and PCM. Scan tool should display actual EGR position as 100% if signal circuit and PCM are okay.
  5. 6

Although the PCM and circuitry acted correctly in previous step, a problem may still lie within terminals which would not show up in probe type testing. Check terminals for being backed out, improperly formed or damaged, and for poor terminal tension.
  6. 10

All circuits to EGR valve are okay at this point. Fault lies internally in EGR valve and therefore must be replaced. Be sure all gasket material is removed from the EGR mounting surface. Even a small amount of material may cause a DTC P0405 to set.
  7. 13

Replacement PCM must be reprogrammed and Tooth Error Correction (TEC) procedure must be performed. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT  and TOOTH ERROR CORRECTION LEARN PROCEDURE  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE.
  8. 14

Check harness connector terminals for being backed out, improperly formed or damaged, and for poor terminal tension.
