Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers in the diagnostic procedures.

MIL (CHECK ENGINE light) should be on steady when ignition is in ON position. If MIL does not illuminate as specified, repair as necessary. See NO MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (CHECK ENGINE LIGHT) under MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHTS. - 2
This step checks Class 2 serial data circuit, and ensures that PCM is able to transmit serial data. - 3
This test ensures that PCM is capable of controlling MIL, and MIL driver circuit is not shorted to ground. - 4
If engine will not start and no DTCs are set. Perform ENGINE CRANKS BUT WILL NOT RUN test in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. - 7
A scan tool parameter not in typical range may help isolate area causing problem. - 10
Vehicle is equipped with a Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM). When PCM is replaced, the new PCM must be programmed. See EEPROM PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE.
