Problem Symptoms Table

HINT:

Use the table below to help determine the cause of the problem symptom. The potential causes of the symptoms are listed in order of probability in the "Suspected Area" column of the table. Check each symptom by checking the suspected areas in the order they are listed. Replace parts as necessary.

Brake system

Low pedal or spongy pedal 1. Fluid leaks in brake system -

4. Parking brake shoe clearance (adjustment necessary) INSPECTION
5. Pad (cracked or distorted), for front DISASSEMBLY 
6. Pad (cracked or distorted), for rear REMOVAL 
7. Piston (stuck or frozen), for front REMOVAL 
8. Piston (stuck or frozen), for rear REMOVAL 
9. Booster push rod (adjustment necessary) DISASSEMBLY 
10. Vacuum leaks in brake system ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION 
11. Brake master cylinder (faulty) REMOVAL 
Brake pull 1. Piston (stuck or frozen), for front REMOVAL 
2. Piston (stuck or frozen), for rear REMOVAL 
3. Pad (oily, cracked or distorted), for front DISASSEMBLY 
4. Pad (oily, cracked or distorted), for rear REMOVAL 
5. Front disc (scored) DISASSEMBLY 
6. Rear disc (scored) REMOVAL 
Brake pedal is depressed firmly but brake is insufficient 1. Fluid leaks in brake system -
2. Air in brake system BLEEDING 
3. Pad (worn, cracked, distorted, oily or glazed), for front DISASSEMBLY 
4. Pad (worn, cracked, distorted, oily or glazed), for rear REMOVAL 
5. Front disc (scored) DISASSEMBLY 
6. Rear disc (scored) REMOVAL 
7. Booster push rod (adjustment necessary) REMOVAL 
8. Vacuum leaks in brake system ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION 
Noise from brakes 1. Pad (worn, cracked, distorted, oily or glazed), for front DISASSEMBLY 
2. Pad (worn, cracked, distorted, oily or glazed), for rear REMOVAL 
3. Installation bolt (loose), for front COMPONENTS 
4. Installation bolt (loose), for rear COMPONENTS 
5. Front disc (scored) DISASSEMBLY 
6. Rear disc (scored) REMOVAL 
7. Pad support plate (loose), for front COMPONENTS
