Disassembly and Assembly: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Nissan Murano and 2003 Nissan Murano. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove engine assembly from vehicle, and separate front suspension member, transaxle and transfer (AWD models) assembly from engine. Refer to ENGINE ASSEMBLY  .
  2. Remove rear engine mounting bracket. Refer to ENGINE ASSEMBLY  .
  3. Remove RH exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THREE WAY CATALYST  .
  4. Install engine sub-attachment with engine stand shaft [SST] right side of cylinder block.
    • Use spacer to engine front side.

    • A widely use engine stand can be used.
CAUTION: Use engine stand that has a load capacity [approximately 220 kg (441 lb) or more] large enough for supporting the engine weight.
NOTE: This example is engine stand for holding at transaxle mounting side with drive plate removed.
  6. Drain engine oil. Refer to CHANGING ENGINE OIL .
  7. Drain engine coolant by removing cylinder block at "B" and "C" at both sides and cylinder block front at "A" as shown in the figure.

  8. Remove cylinder head. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD  .
  9. Remove knock sensor.
CAUTION: Carefully handle sensor avoiding shocks.
  10. Remove drive plate.
    • Loosen mounting bolts in diagonal order.
    CAUTION:
    • Do not disassemble drive plate.
    • Never place drive plate with signal plate facing down.
    • When handling signal plate, take care not to damage or scratch it.
    • Handle signal plate in a manner that prevents it from becoming magnetized.

  11. Remove pilot converter using pilot bushing puller [SST] or suitable tool as necessary.
  12. Remove rear oil seal retainer.
    • Remove by inserting screwdriver between main bearing cap and rear oil seal retainer.
CAUTION: If rear oil seal retainer is removed, replace it with new one.
NOTE: Rear oil seal and retainer make up a single part and are removed as assembly.

  14. Remove connecting rod bearings from connecting rod and connecting rod cap.
CAUTION: When removing them, note the installation position. Keep them in the correct order.
  15. Remove piston rings form piston.
    • Use piston ring expander (commercial service tool).
    CAUTION:
    • When removing piston rings, be careful not to damage piston.
    • Be careful not to damage piston rings by expanding them excessively.
