SERVICE INFORMATION
Oldsmobile has received several questions from dealers about the recent restructuring of the GM-CAMS and Expertec organizations. This restructuring was announced in the fall of 1988 and involves much more than just the joining of CAMS and Expertec. Several groups and activities were joined to form the Service Technology Group.
GM-CAMS and Expertec have joined forces to form a sub-group of the Service Technology Group called Techline. The primary function of Techline is to assist technicians in the accurate diagnosis and repair of General Motors vehicles by using a range of computerized technologies. Most technicians are familiar with some of the products offered through the Techline organization.
The fullline of products include the TECH 1 hand-held diagnostic computer, the T-10 service information system for General Motors service bulletins and technical specifications, and the T-100 GM-CAMS technician terminal. In addition, a T-15 terminal will enhance the capability of the T-10 by offering graphic illustrations to supplement the text displays. The T-100 GM-CAMS terminal also has two available accessories. One is the T-120 gas engine analyzer and the other is the T-170 exhaust gas analyzer.
Oldsmobile is currently conducting a test program of some unique features to be demonstrated on the T-100 technician terminal. With the cooperation of Techline, this test began in February at twelve Oldsmobile dealership locations. The T-100 technician's terminals are equipped with compact disc drives which are used to read specially prepared compact disc read-only-memory (CD- ROM) discs. Use of this compact disc technology allows much more memory capacity which can be used to store additional information for access by the technician.
Increased storage capacity gave Oldsmobile the opportunity to record four model years of bulletins with graphic illustrations on a single disc.
Technicians can do a quick search for information and print out all or part of the information including illustrations. Certain modifications allow you to "zoom" in on a particular portion of the illustration and print only that portion in its enlarged mode. Certain sections of the electrical troubleshooting manual are also stored on the disc for use as reference materials available to the technicians. Early reports from the test dealers indicate that they really find this new feature to be beneficial as an informational source.
In addition, Oldsmobile offers a modified T-100 technician terminal which can be utilized to search for campaign or warranty coverage information through a DCS application. Early reports from test dealers with this capability indicate that this function has great potential. Often, DCS terminals are not conveniently located and are often being used for other purposes when campaign or warranty information is needed. Now, a service advisor can access this information from the T-100 technician terminal anytime the terminal is not being used for diagnostics.
At this time, Oldsmobile feels that our test period will last through April or May. We hope to learn what additional features should be considered which will expand the usefulness of the T-100 equipment. More information will be published as we progress through the test period.
