Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation

PARK/NEUTRAL SWITCH
The automatic transaxle valve lever position sensor supplies the park/neutral input to the powertrain control module. The park/neutral switch input tells the PCM whether the transmission is in Park, Neutral, or a drive gear selection. This input effects idle speed, fuel injector pulse width and ignition timing.

TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR
The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) interprets the position of the manual valve. This information is sent to the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Also the TRS provides for Park/Neutral only starter operation and back-up lamp operation.

The TRS connector extends outside the transaxle on the left side, next to the fill tube. The TRS is mounted to the top of the valve body. The TRS and valve body must be removed from the transaxle as an assembly.
