Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE .
  2. Remove the console trim plate. Refer to TRIM PLATE REPLACEMENT - FRONT FLOOR CONSOLE (PONTIAC) or TRIM PLATE REPLACEMENT - FRONT FLOOR CONSOLE (OLDSMOBILE) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  3. Remove the I/P accessory trim plate. Refer to TRIM PLATE REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) ACCESSORY (PONTIAC) or TRIM PLATE REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) ACCESSORY (OLDSMOBILE) in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  4. Remove the instrument panel cluster. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) REPLACEMENT in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  5. Disconnect the reverse lockout cable from the shifter.
  6. Remove the reverse lockout cable from the shifter bracket.

  7. Remove the ignition switch bolts.
  8. Position the ignition switch in the I/P cluster opening.

  9. Turn the ignition key to the on position.
  10. Use a flat bladed tool to release the lock from the ignition switch.
  11. Tie a string to the ignition switch end of the cable.
  12. Feed the cable from the I/P and from under the carpet at the shifter location.
