Installation Procedure

  1. Install the outer tie rod ends to the steering gear. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
    2. Fig 1: Removing Steering Gear To Frame Bolts

  2. Install the steering gear to the vehicle. Rotate the gear as necessary to clear the rear transmission mount.
    3. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  3. Install the steering gear to frame bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 70 N.m (52 lb ft) plus an additional 90 degrees.

  4. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear as noted during removal.
  5. Install the new intermediate steering shaft to steering gear pinch bolt.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 49 N.m (36 lb ft).

  6. Connect the outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  7. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and wheels.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Check the vehicle for alignment. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment in Wheel Alignment.
