Power Steering Gear Replacement

Power Steering Gear Replacement

Callout Component Name
NOTE: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
  • The steering column
  • The intermediate shaft
  • The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.
Preliminary Procedure: Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
1 Tie Rod End Outer Nuts (Qty: 2)
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .

Tighten:  30 N.m (22 lb ft) plus an additional 115 degrees

2 Outer Tie Rod End
Tip:  Remove the tie rod end.
3 Power Steering Outlet Pipe/Hose Fitting
Tip:  Drain the power steering system.

Tighten:  27 N.m (20 lb ft)

4 Power Steering Gear Mounting Nut/Bolt (Qty: 2)

Tighten:  60 N.m (44 lb ft)

5 Power Steering Gear

Procedure

  1. Secure steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation.
  2. Remove the intermediate shaft bolt from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement . Discard bolt after use.
  3. Fill the power steering system. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  4. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  5. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
