Engine oil level sensor 

INFORMATION

Unnecessary replacement of the engine oil level sensor 

We have discovered that engine oil level sensors are increasingly being replaced, but in subsequent tests carried out by the manufacturer, these oil level sensors are found to be functioning correctly.

For this reason, we want to inform you that after filling the engine with engine oil, the oil level must be measured using the on-board computer (confirmation check). If the confirmation check is not carried out, the "Check oil level" warning message will still be displayed.

In addition, the "Check oil level" warning message will come on if the oil level has not been checked for a long time. In this case, check the oil level to determine the current oil level and correct it if necessary. The oil level should be checked regularly  , e.g. whenever you refuel, as described in the Owner's Manual.

Ask the customer whether he/she carried out a confirmation check after checking the oil level and explain how to do this correctly in accordance with the Owner's Manual (see Extract from the Owner's Manual below).

If the complaint "Blue smoke after starting engine" is received and "Engine-oil level over maximum" is diagnosed as the cause, the engine-oil level display in the instrument cluster must be re-coded using PIWIS Tester software 10.200 (or higher).

=> The updated coding will ensure that in addition to the usual "Check oil level" message displayed during oil level measurement, the very top segment of the oil level display (engine-oil level over Max marking) will be shown if too much engine oil is added.

This indicates that engine oil has been overfilled above the maximum level.

This option is available with PIWIS Tester software version 10.200  (or higher) as of 09.08.2011.

PROCEDURE

1. Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least 40 A to the vehicle battery.
2. Switch on ignition.
3. Connect PIWIS Tester II 9818 with test software version 10.200 (or higher) installed.
4. Select => 'Instrument cluster' in the control unit selection screen and confirm your selection by pressing F12.
5. If you want to create a VAL, confirm the VAL prompt by pressing [F12].
6. Select the => 'Codings/adaptations' menu in the "Instrument cluster" overview.
7. Select the => 'Basic coding' function and press [F12] to confirm your selection.
8. Press [F12] to continue after verifying Instrument cluster vehicle data.
9. Select the M-numbers corresponding to the relevant vehicle equipment (see PIWIS > Vehicle Information) so that a tick appears after each M-number => Instrument cluster - coding I-numbers. Only the M-numbers that are relevant for coding are queried during M-number selection.
10. Once all M-numbers corresponding to the relevant vehicle equipment that are required for coding have been set, press [F8] to save the values. Once the values have been saved, the message "Modified values have been buffered" appears.
11. Then press [F12] to perform coding. Once coding is complete, the message "Coding has been completed successfully" appears and a tick appears in the "Status" box.
12. Once coding is completed successfully, press [F12] to return to the start page of the menu.
13. Switch off ignition.
14. Disconnect the PIWIS Tester from the vehicle and
15. Switch off and disconnect the battery charger.

    End  of remedial action.
