Throttle Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Throttle Position Sensor:

PURPOSE
The throttle sensor informs the ECU of throttle angle and speed of application as well as idle position. This information is used to correct for acceleration and provide a reference point for the ECU.

LOCATION
The sensor is mounted to the throttle body on the intake manifold.

CONSTRUCTION
The throttle position sensor contains both a potentiometer (variable resistor) and an idle switch.

OPERATION
Whenever the ignition is ON, the throttle sensor returns a signal to the ECU. The unit functions as a throttle operated potentiometer. The ECU sends a known voltage signal to the unit. Sensor resistance is based on throttle angle. Depending on resistance, an output signal is sent to the ECU.
