ISSUE & TIP

Toyota oil pressure switches can leak quite a bit of oil when they do go bad. Although most are pretty accessible, the switch on a Tercel (3A) engine with air conditioning is buried beneath the brackets for the alternator, idler pulley, and air conditioning compressor.

There is a way to avoid removing all this hardware when replacing a bad switch. KAL tool 1233 is a six-point 1-1/16-inch socket with a 3/4-inch hex-head on it. If you shorten the socket by grinding away about a millimeter of metal, the socket will fit through the bracket and slide over the switch. Then, if you remove the oil filter, you can use a 19 mm open-end wrench to unscrew the switch.
