Center Support And Components: Reassembly
- Install NEW "O" rings and one-way clutch assembly on sun gear. Install NEW oil seal rings on center support. Install NEW "O" rings on brake pistons and lubricate with ATF fluid. Install brake "1" piston into center support by pressing in with cup side up, being careful not to damage "O" rings.
- Rotate by hand to make sure it is seated correctly. Place springs on piston and position spring retainer with snap ring in place. Compress spring retainer and install small snap ring. Install NEW "O" rings on center support and piston.
- Turn center support over and install brake "2" piston, springs and retainer in the same manner as brake "1". Turn center support over and install No. 1 brake "1" plates, disc and flange. Use low pressure compressed air to blow all excess ATF from discs. See Fig 1 for steel plate and lined plate installation sequence.

- With large snap rings installed to brake plates, measure piston stroke of brake piston. Make sure snap ring ends are not aligned with cutouts. Brake "1" piston stroke should be .026-.051" (.65-1.3 mm) with 57 psi (4 kg/cm2
) air pressure applied.
- Turn center support over and install No. 2 brake piston plate, discs and flange in the same manner as No. 1. Using low pressure compressed air, blow all excess ATF from discs. Install snap ring to center support. Make sure snap ring is not aligned with cutouts.
- Brake "2" piston stroke should be .037-.068" (.93-1.72 mm) with 57 psi (4 kg/cm2
) air pressure applied. If stroke exceeds the limit, clutch pack is probably worn. If stroke is less than the limit, parts may be disassembled or there is excess ATF on discs.
- Install sun gear to center support. Align No. 2 brake disc flukes. Mesh brake hub with discs, twisting and jiggling hub as required. Check rotation of gear to confirm correct installation of front one-way clutch.
