Choke Opener System Preliminary Inspection: Corolla

  1. Check Thermostatic Vacuum Switching Valve (TVSV) operation with cold engine. With coolant temperature less than 122°F (50°C), disconnect vacuum hose from choke opener diaphragm. See Figure.
  2. Step down and then release accelerator pedal. Start engine. Reconnect vacuum hose to choke opener. Check that choke linkage does not move.
  3. Check TVSV, choke opener diaphragm and linkage with warm engine. Warm engine to operating temperature. Stop engine. Disconnect vacuum hose to choke opener diaphragm.
  4. Set fast idle cam. While holding throttle slightly open, push choke valve closed and hold it while releasing throttle valve. Start engine. Do not touch accelerator pedel.
  5. Reconnect vacuum hose to choke opener. Check that choke linkage moves and fast idle cam is released on 3rd step. If choke opener is not functioning as described, inspect each individual system component. Inspect Thermostatic Vacuum Switching Valve (TVSV) and choke opener.
