Check Engine Light Functional Test

  1. The "CHECK ENGINE" warning light should come ON when the ignition switch is ON and the engine is not running. See Fig 1 for location. If the light does not come on, a fault exists. See the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT COME ON  procedure (below) to troubleshoot.
  2. When the engine is started, the "CHECK ENGINE" warning light should go out. If so, the "CHECK ENGINE" light is operating properly.
  3. If the light remains on, the diagnostic system has detected a malfunction or abnormality in the system. See the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON  procedure (below) to troubleshoot.
