Choke Opener System Preliminary Inspection: Pickup

  1. Check Bi-Metallic Vacuum Switching Valve (BVSV) with cold engine. With coolant temperature less than 131°F (55°C), disconnect vacuum hose from choke opener. See Figure & 38.
  2. Step down and then release accelerator pedal. Start engine. Reconnect vacuum hose to choke opener. Check that choke linkage does not move. See Figure.
  3. Check BVSV, choke opener diaphragm and linkage with warm engine. With engine at operating temperature, disconnect vacuum hose from choke opener. Set fast idle cam. While holding throttle slightly open, push choke valve closed and hold it while releasing throttle valve.
  4. Start engine. Do not touch accelerator pedal. Reconnect vacuum hose to choke opener. Check that choke linkage moves and that fast idle cam is released on 4th step.
  5. If choke opener is not working as described, test each individual system component. Inspect Bi-Metallic Vacuum Switching Valve (BVSV) and choke opener diaphragm.
