System Test: Tercel
- Check condition of hoses and tubes. On Federal models, disconnect air suction hose from air cleaner. See Fig 1. Start engine. With engine idling, check that a bubbling noise is heard from end of hose.
- On California models, disconnect and plug vacuum hose from vacuum shutoff valve. Disconnect air suction hose from air cleaner. See Fig 1. Start engine. With engine idling, check that a bubbling noise is heard from end of air suction hose.
- On M/T, disconnect and then reconnect air suction hose to air cleaner cap and vacuum hose to shutoff valve. Check that a bubbling noise is heard from valve inlet within 2-6 seconds. See Fig 1.
NOTE:
The air suction system on California Pickup (Carbureted) model is controlled by the Emission Control Computer and therefore is closely tied with the carburetor/fuel feedback control system. See ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in this article for information and testing of the vehicle speed sensor, the coolant temperature sensor and the oxygen sensor.
