System Test: Tercel

  1. Check condition of hoses and tubes. On Federal models, disconnect air suction hose from air cleaner. See Fig 1. Start engine. With engine idling, check that a bubbling noise is heard from end of hose.
  2. On California models, disconnect and plug vacuum hose from vacuum shutoff valve. Disconnect air suction hose from air cleaner. See Fig 1. Start engine. With engine idling, check that a bubbling noise is heard from end of air suction hose.
  3. On M/T, disconnect and then reconnect air suction hose to air cleaner cap and vacuum hose to shutoff valve. Check that a bubbling noise is heard from valve inlet within 2-6 seconds. See Fig 1.

NOTE: The air suction system on California Pickup (Carbureted) model is controlled by the Emission Control Computer and therefore is closely tied with the carburetor/fuel feedback control system. See ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in this article for information and testing of the vehicle speed sensor, the coolant temperature sensor and the oxygen sensor.
