Speed Sensor Diagnostics

NOTE: During diagnosis, DO NOT turn ignition off, pull parking brake lever and press brake pedal more than 16 times or diagnostic codes will be erased. Brake system functions as a conventional system during speed sensors diagnosis.
  1. Ensure battery voltage is approximately 12 volts. Turn ignition on. Ensure ABS light illuminates and then goes out after approximately 3 seconds. If ABS light does not illuminate, check fuse, bulb and wiring harness. Ensure ABS light goes out.
  2. Turn ignition off. Using a jumper wire, connect check connector terminals Tc and Ts to E1. See Figure-Figure . Engage parking brake. Start engine. DO NOT press brake pedal. ABS light will illuminate 4 times a second. Go to next step.
    NOTE: While ABS light is off, DO NOT accelerate, decelerate, brake, shift, move steering or drive on rough road surfaces as these conditions affect test.
  3. Drive vehicle straight ahead at 2.5-3.7 MPH. Ensure ABS light illuminates after a one-second pause. If ABS light illuminates without blinking when vehicle is not in specified speed range, stop vehicle and record diagnostic codes. Turn ignition off. Repair as necessary. See SPEED SENSOR DIAGNOSTIC CODES .
  4. If ABS light illuminates while vehicle speed is in specified range, check is completed. If vehicle speed exceeds 3.7 MPH, ABS light will blink again. If ABS light blinks when vehicle speed exceeds 3.7 MPH, speed sensors are okay.
  5. Drive vehicle straight ahead at 28-34 MPH. Ensure ABS light illuminates after a one-second pause. If ABS light illuminates without blinking when vehicle is not in specified speed range, stop vehicle and record diagnostic codes. Turn ignition off. Repair as necessary. See SPEED SENSOR DIAGNOSTIC CODES .
  6. If ABS light illuminates while vehicle speed is in specified range, check is completed. If vehicle speed exceeds 34 MPH, ABS light will blink again. If ABS light blinks when vehicle speed exceeds 34 MPH, sensor rotors are okay.
  7. Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wire from check connector. Clear diagnostic codes. See CLEARING CODES .
