Section 6 (Engine Controls - System/Component Tests): Introduction

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Before testing separate components or systems, perform procedures in BASIC TESTING - 4-CYL or BASIC TESTING - V6 articles.

Since many computer-controlled and monitored components set a diagnostic trouble code if they malfunction, also perform procedures in TESTS W/CODES - 4-CYL or TESTS W/CODES - V6 article.

NOTE: Testing individual components does not isolate shorts or opens. Perform all voltage tests with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
NOTE: When testing some systems, tachometer may be required. Tachometer must be connected to proper terminals. For tachometer connections, see IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE in ADJUSTMENTS - 4-CYL or ADJUSTMENTS - V6 article.
