Ignition System: Distributor: Installation

  1. Install rotor on distributor (if removed). Install NEW "O" ring on distributor housing. Coat "O" ring with engine oil.
  2. Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise until No. 1 (front cylinder at timing chain end of engine) is on compression stroke. Align groove on crankshaft pulley aligns with 5°BTDC mark on timing chain cover.
NOTE: It may be necessary to remove valve cover and ensure rocker arms on No. 1 cylinder are loose to verify compression stroke. If rocker arms are not loose, rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise one full revolution.
  3. Place rotor at 12 o'clock position. See Fig 1. Install distributor so bolt hole on distributor flange is centered with bolt hole on cylinder head. When distributor is fully installed, the rotor should be in specified position. See Fig 1. Remove rotor.
  4. Align signal rotor with pick-up coil. See Fig 2. Install and tighten distributor hold-down bolt to specification. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW "O" ring when installing distributor cap. Check ignition timing. Refer to ADJUSTMENTS - 2.4L article.
