Diagnosis & Repair

  1. Connect Toyota scan tester. See Figure. Turn ignition and scan tester on. Read STA signal on scan tester. Turn ignition switch to START position and release.
  2. STA signal should be OFF with ignition switch in ON position. STA signal should be ON with ignition switch in START position. If STA signal is correct as shown, inspect all applicable connectors. See wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Malfunction may be intermittent.
  3. If STA signal is NOT as specified in step 2), inspect circuit between starter relay and ECM for open. See wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as needed. If circuit is okay, replace ECM and retest.
