TEST Mode Code Retrieval (Using MIL)
- Ensure vehicle battery is fully charged. Apply parking brake. Shift transmission into Neutral (M/T) or Park (A/T). Turn A/C and all accessories off. Ensure throttle is in idle position.
- Before retrieving codes, verify MIL on instrument panel is operational. See MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) INSPECTION . Turn ignition off.NOTE: TEST mode will not start if jumper wire is installed between terminals TE2 and E1 at DLC2 after ignition is turned on.
- Connect a jumper wire between terminals TE2 and E1 at DLC2. See Figure. Turn ignition on, with engine off. TEST mode is operational if MIL on instrument cluster flashes. If MIL will not flash, check TE2 and E1 circuits. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary.
- Disconnect jumper wire from DLC2. Road test vehicle. Try to simulate conditions of driveability complaint described by customer. Stop vehicle, but DO NOT turn engine off. Reconnect jumper wire between terminals TE2 and E1 at DLC2.
- Count number of flashes from MIL on instrument cluster. If system is operating properly (no DTCs), MIL will flash continuously and evenly. See Figure.
- If driveability problem exists and no DTCs are present, go to TESTS W/O CODES article for diagnosis by symptom. If MIL will not flash, check TE2 and E1 circuits. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary.
- If more than one DTC is stored, a 2 1/2 second pause will occur before next DTC is flashed. Codes will be displayed in order of smallest numbered code and continue to largest numbered code. Once all DTCs are displayed, a 4 1/2 second pause will occur, then DTCs will be repeated. See Figure.
- Identify DTC and perform appropriate circuit test. See TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table. After repairs for DTC have been completed, DTCs must be cleared from ECM memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES .
