Removal (Tercel)

  1. Crankshaft position sensor is located behind lower timing belt cover, near crankshaft sprocket. See Figure-28.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect electrical connector for crankshaft position sensor. Electrical connector is located near oil dipstick.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. Remove accessory drive belts. Disconnect necessary hoses and remove charcoal canister. Remove passenger's side lower engine cover for access to crankshaft pulley.
  4. Support engine with hoist to release pressure from front (timing belt end) engine mount. Remove bolts/nuts and front (timing belt end) engine mount assembly for access to timing belt covers.
  5. Remove bolts, upper timing belt cover and gaskets. Remove bolts and accessory drive pulley (if equipped) from front of crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Using puller, remove crankshaft pulley. Remove bolts, lower timing belt cover and gasket. Remove bolt and crankshaft position sensor.
