Description & Operation

NOTE: This article covers procedures for body control system as well as driver door control system. Driver door control system may be referenced when using this article.
WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

Body control system controls the following systems: power windows on passenger's side front door and both rear doors, power door locks, remote keyless entry system, illuminated entry system, headlights, taillights and various other functions such as; seat belt warning indicator and anti-theft system indicator light. Body Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is connected to a multiplex communication system with Engine Control Module (ECM), gateway ECU, driver's door ECU, A/C amplifier and combination meter. This communication system is referred to as the multiplex control system. Before starting any diagnosis on body control system components or circuits, check multiplex control system operation to ensure that all ECUs are able to communicate with each other. Driver door control system is used to control the following systems: power windows on driver's side front door, jam protection function and auto up or down function for power window on driver's side front door. Driver's door Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is connected to a multiplex communication network with Engine Control Module (ECM), gateway ECU, A/C amplifier and combination meter. Driver's door ECU may also be referred to as power window master switch. This communication system is referred to as the multiplex control system. Before starting any diagnosis on driver door control system components or circuits, check multiplex control system operation to ensure that all ECUs are able to communicate with each other.
