Test No. 15: Illuminated Entry System Does Not Operate

NOTE: When passenger's side Junction Block (J/B) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) receives a courtesy signal, the passenger's side J/B ECU will turn on the illuminated entry system which consists of front personal light, interior light at center of headliner and luggage compartment light. See Figure.
  1. Check CUT fuse (30-amp) and DOME fuse (10-amp). Fuses are located in fuse/relay box at driver's side front corner of engine compartment. See Figure. If fuses are okay, go to next step. If any fuse is defective, repair short in wiring for appropriate fuse. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. For additional wiring for power supply circuit, see POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. Check front personal light, interior light and luggage compartment light. See FRONT PERSONAL LIGHT  or INTERIOR LIGHT OR LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LIGHT  under COMPONENT TESTS. If lights are okay, go to next step. If lights are defective, replace light assembly and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  3. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between battery, CUT fuse, DOME fuse, front personal light, interior light, luggage compartment light and passenger's side J/B ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. Front personal light may also be referred to as personal light. Passenger's side J/B ECU is located at passenger's side of instrument panel. See Figure. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector are defective, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  4. Check that retaining screw on door courtesy switch for each door is tight to provide good ground connection. Door courtesy switches are located on pillar post at rear of door. See Figure. If retaining screw for door courtesy switch is tight and good ground connection exists, go to next step. If retaining screw for door courtesy switch is loose, tighten retaining screw and recheck illuminated entry system operation. If illuminated entry system still does not operate, go to next step. If illuminated entry system operates, the problem was the loose retaining screw on door courtesy switch.
  5. Check door courtesy switch for each door. See DOOR COURTESY SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If door courtesy switches are okay, go to next step. If any door courtesy switch is defective, replace door courtesy switch and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  6. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between each door courtesy switch and passenger's side J/B ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector are defective, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  7. Check door unlock detection switch on driver's side front door and passenger's side front door. See DOOR UNLOCK DETECTION SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If door unlock detection switches are okay, go to next step. If any door unlock detection switch is defective, replace door unlock detection switch and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  8. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between door unlock detection switch on driver's side front door and passenger's side front door and passenger's side J/B ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in POWER DOOR LOCKS - TRUCKS (EXCEPT SEQUOIA) article and REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - RAV4 article. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector are defective, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  9. Check passenger's side J/B ECU for proper voltage and input signals. See PASSENGER'S SIDE JUNCTION BLOCK ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT  under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If proper voltage and input signals exist, go to next step. If proper voltage and input signals do not exist, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  10. Replace passenger's side J/B ECU with a known-good passenger's side J/B ECU and recheck illuminated entry system operation. If illuminated entry system operates properly, original passenger's side J/B ECU was defective. If illuminated entry system still does not operate properly, check wiring harness and electrical connectors for passenger's side J/B ECU and illuminated entry system for intermittent problem. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary.
