Test No. 12: Illuminated Entry System Does Not Operate
NOTE:
Illuminated entry system should turn on front interior light (all models) and interior light No. 1 (models without sun roof or models with power door locks) when either front door or sliding side door is opened. On models without sun roof and models with power door locks, the switch on front interior light and interior light No. 1 must be in DOOR position for illuminated entry system operation. On all models, after all doors are closed, the light should remain on for about 15 seconds and then turn off. Light will turn off immediately if any of the following conditions exist: all doors are closed with ignition switch in ACC or ON position, all doors are locked when light is still on, or one door is closed with lock knob pushed forward (front doors) or downward (sliding side door) while the other doors are locked. Illuminated entry system should also turn on the lights for about 15 seconds when driver's side front door is unlocked with the key even if door is not opened.
- Front interior light and interior light No. 1 are located on the headliner. See Figure. Check front interior light and interior light No. 1. See FRONT INTERIOR LIGHT and INTERIOR LIGHT NO. 1 under COMPONENT TESTS. If light is okay, go to next step. If light is defective, replace light or switch as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
- Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between battery and the inoperative light, and between the inoperative light and Body Electronic Control Unit (ECU). See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. Body ECU may also be referred to as integration relay. Front interior light may also be referred to as front personal light or personal light. Body ECU is located at driver's side of instrument panel on the fuse/relay box. See Figure. Electrical connector I13 (7-pin or 25-pin) and electrical connector I16 (18-pin) are located at body ECU and a 12-pin electrical connector is located at rear of body ECU. See Figure. If wiring harness and electrical connector are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical are defective, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
- Open each door and check that door courtesy light comes on when door is opened and goes off when door is closed. If any door courtesy light does not operate properly when door is open and closed, go to next step. If door courtesy light operates properly when each door is open and closed, go to step 6.
- Check door courtesy switch. See DOOR COURTESY SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If door courtesy switch is okay, go to next step. If door courtesy switch is defective, replace door courtesy switch and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
- Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between door courtesy switch and body ECU, and between door courtesy light and body ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector is defective, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
- Check door unlock detection switch on each front door. See DOOR UNLOCK DETECTION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If door unlock detection switch is okay, go to next step. If door unlock detection switch is defective, replace door unlock detection switch or door lock assembly as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
- Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between body ground and door unlock detection switch, and between door unlock detection switch and body ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - SIENNA article or POWER DOOR LOCKS - TRUCKS (EXCEPT SEQUOIA) article. Body ECU may also be referred to as integration relay. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector is defective, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
- Check body ECU for proper voltage and input signals. See BODY ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If proper voltage and input signals exist, go to next step. If proper voltage and input signals do not exist, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
- Replace body ECU with a known-good body ECU and recheck illuminated entry system operation. If illuminated entry system operates properly, original body ECU was defective. If illuminated entry system still does not operate properly, check wiring harness and electrical connectors for body ECU for an intermittent problem. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary.
