CHECK Mode Code Retrieval

NOTE:
  • Hand-held tester only:  Compared to the normal mode, the check mode has an increased sensitivity to detect malfunctions. Furthermore, the same diagnostic items which are detected in the normal mode can also be detected in the check mode.
  • If the hand-held tester switches the ECM from the normal mode to the check mode or vice-versa, or if the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or OFF during the check mode, the DTC and freeze frame data will be erased.
  1. Ensure vehicle battery has 11 V or more. Apply parking brake. Ensure the throttle valve is fully closed. Shift transmission in P or N position. Turn A/C and all accessories OFF. Turn ignition OFF.
  2. Prepare and connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3 at the lower center of the instrument panel. See Figure. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester switch ON.
  3. Switch the hand-held tester from the normal mode to the check mode. Check that the MIL flashes.
  4. Start the engine (the MIL goes off after the engine starts). Try to simulate conditions of driveability complaint described by customer.
NOTE: Leave the ignition switch ON until you have checked the DTC, etc.
  5. After simulating the malfunction conditions, use the hand-held tester diagnosis selector to check the DTC and freeze frame data, etc. For more information on freeze frame data, see FREEZE FRAME DATA . If driveability problem exists and no DTCs are present, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom.
NOTE: Be careful not to turn the ignition switch OFF. Turning the ignition switch OFF switches the diagnosis system from the check mode to normal mode, so all the DTCs, etc. are erased.
  6. If any DTCs are present, perform appropriate DTC test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  7. After repairs for DTC have been completed, DTC must be cleared from ECM memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . Road test vehicle to ensure all symptoms and/or complaints have been repaired.
