Crankshaft Position Sensor: 4Runner

  1. Crankshaft position sensor is located at front of engine, just above crankshaft pulley. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Manufacturer lists inspection procedure with crankshaft position sensor removed before checking resistance.
  2. Remove crankshaft position sensor. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under IGNITION SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - V6 & V8 article.
  3. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between electrical terminals on crankshaft position sensor. Replace crankshaft position sensor if resistance is not within specification. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR RESISTANCE  table.
  4. Reinstall crankshaft position sensor. On 4Runner 4.0L V6, tighten crankshaft position sensor bolt to 80 INCH lbs. (9.0 N.m). On 4Runner 4.7L V8, tighten crankshaft position sensor bolt to 58 INCH lbs. (6.5 N.m). See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under IGNITION SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - V6 & V8 article.
