Basic Inspection
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota Camry Solara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
When the malfunction code is not confirmed in the DTC check, trouble shooting should be carried out in all the possible circuits considered as causes of the problems. In many cases, by carrying out the basic engine check shown in the following flow chart, the location causing the problem can be found quickly and efficiently. There, using this check is essential in the engine trouble shooting.
- Check the battery positive voltage. If voltage is 11 V or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 11 V, charge or replace the battery.
- Check if engine cranks. If the engine cranks, go to next step. If the engine does not crank, see appropriate STARTERS article in ENGINES.
- Check if engine starts. If the engine starts, go to next step. If the engine does not start, go to step 7.
- Remove the air filter and visually check that the air filter is not excessively dirty or oily. If necessary, clean the filter with compressed air. First blow from the inside thoroughly, then blow from outside of the filter. If the results are OK, go to next step. If the results are not good, repair or replace the air filter.
- Check the idle speed. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS - 4-CYLINDER article. If the results are OK, go to next step. If the results are not good, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Check the ignition timing. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS - 4-CYLINDER article. If the results are OK, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If the results are not good, continue to trouble shoot.
- Check the fuel pressure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 4-CYL article. If the results are OK, go to next step. If the results are not good, continue to trouble shoot. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 4-CYL article.
- Check for spark. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 4-CYL article. If the results are OK, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If the results are not good, continue to trouble shoot.
NOTE:
Carry out this check when the engine is stopped and ignition switch OFF.
