Diagnosis & Repair

NOTE:
  • If DTCs P0110, P0115, P0116, P0120 and P0121 are output simultaneously, engine coolant temperature sensor circuit may be open. Perform trouble shooting of DTC P0115 first.
  • Read freeze frame data using hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool, as freeze frame data records engine conditions when malfunction is detected. When trouble shooting, it is useful for determining whether vehicle was running or stopped, engine was warmed up or not, air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, etc. at time of malfunction.
  1. Read output DTC (besides P0116). If only P0116 is output, go to next step. If P0116 and other codes are output, diagnose and repair those codes first. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  2. Inspect thermostat. See appropriate article in ENGINES. If results are OK, replace EFI engine coolant temperature sensor. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - 4-CYLINDER article. If results are not good, replace thermostat. See appropriate article in ENGINES.
