Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly and disconnect center harness connector. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage in Yellow/Black wire (circuit D+) between ground and harness side of upper spiral cable connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, go to step  5.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Reconnect air bag sensor assembly center connector. Connect jumper wire between Yellow/Black wire and Yellow wire (circuit D-) on harness side of upper spiral cable connector. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 12/B0103 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly. If DTC 12/B0103 is not displayed, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Connect driver-side air bag harness connector to upper spiral cable connector. If DTC 12/B0103 is displayed, replace driver-side air bag module. If DTC 12/B0103 is not displayed, go to next step.
  4. Check for intermittent air bag system fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If AIR BAG warning light illuminates while checking for intermittent fault, go to step  1. If AIR BAG warning light does not illuminate while checking for intermittent fault, replace all air bag system components, including wiring harness.
  5. Disconnect lower spiral cable harness connector. Measure voltage in Yellow/Black wire between ground and harness side of lower spiral cable connector. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, replace wiring harness between air bag sensor assembly and spiral cable.
  6. Measure voltage in Yellow/Black wire between ground and harness side of upper spiral cable connector. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, replace spiral cable. See SPIRAL CABLE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
