When using hand-held tester:

  1. Connect the hand-held tester and check operation of fuel pump. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3. 
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester main switch ON. 
    3. Select the item "DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/ACTIVE TEST/FUEL PUMP/SPD". 

    CHECK: 

    Check the relay operation while operating it with the hand-held tester.

    Standard: Operating noise can be heard from the relay. 

    OK: Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in problem symptoms table (See  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ). 

    NG: Go to next step. 

  2. Check ECM power source circuit (See  ECM POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT  ). 

    NG: Repair or replace power source circuit. 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  3. Check circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B.

    CHECK: 

    Inspect the circuit opening relay.

    OK:

    NG: Replace circuit opening relay. 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  4. Check voltage between terminals FC and E01 of ECM. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between the specified terminals of the E4 and E6 ECM connectors.

    OK: 

    SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    FC (E4-10) - E01 (E6-7) 9 to 14 V

    OK: Go to step   7 . 

    NG: Go to next step. 

  5. Check for open and short in harness and connector between EFI relay and circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. (a) Remove the EFI relay from the engine room R/B. 
    2. (b) Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B. 

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance between the wire harness side connectors.

    OK: 

    Standard (Check for open):

    Standard (Check for short):

    NG: Repair or replace harness or connector. 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  6. Check for open and short in harness and connector between ECM and circuit opening relay. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Disconnect the E4 ECM connector. 
    2. Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B. 

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance between the wire harness side connectors.

    OK:

    Standard (Check for Open): 

    SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    FC (E4-10) - Circuit opening relay terminal 2 of J/B Below 1 Ω

    Standard (Check for short): 

    SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    FC (E4-10) or Circuit opening relay terminal 2 of J/B - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: Repair or replace harness or connector. 

    OK: Go to next step. 

    Replace ECM (See COMPONENTS ).

  7. Check fuel pump (See  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ). 

    NG: Repair or replace fuel pump. 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  8. Check for open and short in harness and connector between circuit opening relay and fuel pump, fuel pump and body ground. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Remove the circuit opening relay from the instrument panel J/B. 
    2. Disconnect the F10 fuel pump connector. 

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance between the wire harness side connectors.

    OK: 

    Standard (Check for open):

    Standard (Check for short): 

    SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    Circuit opening relay terminal 3 of J/B or Fuel pump (F10-4) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: Repair or replace harness or connector. 

    OK: Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in problem symptoms table (See  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  ).
