Inspection Procedure
HINT:
- If DTCs related to different systems that have terminal E2 as the ground terminal are output simultaneously, terminal E2 may have an open circuit.
- Read freeze frame data using the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
Hand-held tester:
- Connect hand-held tester, and read the voltage for accelerator pedal position sensor data.
PREPARATION:
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester ON.
CHECK:
Read the voltage for the accelerator pedal position sensor data.
OK:
Table Accelerator Pedal Position Voltage TableAccelerator Pedal VPA VPA2 Released 0.3 to 0.9 V 1.8 to 2.7 V Depressed 3.2 to 4.8 V 4.7 to 5.1 V - OK : Replace ECM (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
- NG : Go to Next Step
- Check accelerator pedal position sensor (See THROTTLE BODY (SMT)
).
- NG : Replace accelerator pedal position sensor (See REPLACEMENT ).
- OK : Go to Next Step
- Check voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector.
PREPARATION:
- Remove the ECM cover.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector.
OK:
- Voltage: 4.5 to 5.5 V
- NG : Replace ECM (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
- OK : Go to Next Step
- Check voltage between terminals VPA and E2, and VPA2 and E2 of ECM connectors.
PREPARATION:
- Remove the ECM cover
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between terminals VPA and E2, and VPA2 and E2 of ECM connectors.
OK:

- OK : Replace ECM (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
- NG : Go to Next Step
- Check for open and short in harness and connector in VC, VPA, VPA2 and E2 circuits between ECM and accelerator pedal position sensor (See PROCEDURE
).
- NG : Repair or replace harness nad connector.
- OK : Replace ECM (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
OBD II scan tool (excluding hand-held tester):
- Check accelerator pedal position sensor (See THROTTLE BODY (SMT)
).
- NG : Replace accelerator pedal position sensor (See REPLACEMENT ).
- OK : Go to Next Step
- Check voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector.
PREPARATION:
- Remove the ECM cover.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector.
OK:
- Voltage: 4.5 to 5.5 V
- NG : Replace ECM (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
- OK : Go to Next Step
- Check voltage between terminals VPA and E2, and VPA2 and E2 of ECM connectors.
PREPARATION:
- Remove the ECM cover.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between terminals VPA and E2, and VPA2 and E2 of ECM connectors.

- OK : Replace ECM (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) ).
- NG : Go to Next Step
