Diagnosis & Repair (Using Hand-Held Tester)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus LS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect hand-held tester, and read value of throttle control motor current. If the motor current value is zero amps even when the accelerator pedal is depressed and released, the throttle motor or the wire harness may be open. Start the engine. Read the throttle motor current value on the hand-held tester. If current value is 7 amps or less, go to next step. If motor current value is above 7 amps, disconnect the throttle motor connector. If value is 7 amps or less, go to next step. If value is 7 amps or more, go to step  3.
  2. Check throttle control motor. See THROTTLE CONTROLS in SYSTEMS & COMPONENT TESTING article. Replace throttle body as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
  3. Check for open and short in harness and connector between throttle control motor and ECM. Repair as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
  4. Connect hand-held tester, and read value of throttle control motor current. At idle, current should be 7 amps or less. With accelerator pedal quickly depressed, current should be .5 amps or more. If okay, check for intermittent problems. If not, check and replace ECM.
