Charcoal Canister

  1. Remove charcoal canister assembly and inspect for cracks or damage. See CHARCOAL CANISTER under EMISSION SYSTEMS in REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION - EXCEPT GX470 article.
  2. While holding purge port closed, blow air at .26 psi (1.76 kPa) into EVAP port and check that air flows from air drain port. See Fig 1.
  3. While holding purge port and air drain port closed, blow air at .26 PSI (1.76 kPa) into EVAP port and check that air does not flow from air inlet port. See Fig 2.
  4. Apply vacuum of 1.01 IN. Hg (3.43 kPa) to purge port. See Fig 3. Check that vacuum does not decrease when air inlet port is closed. Check that vacuum decreases when air inlet port is released.
  5. While holding air inlet port closed, apply vacuum of 1.01 IN. Hg (3.43 kPa) to EVAP port and check that air flows into purge port.
  6. If operation is not as specified, replace charcoal canister.
  7. Remove cap from vent port.
  8. If fuel EVAP system operates properly, it may be necessary to check operation of EVAP Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV), vapor pressure sensor and vapor pressure sensor Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV). See EVAP VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE , VAPOR PRESSURE SENSOR  and VAPOR PRESSURE SENSOR VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE  .
  9. Reinstall charcoal canister.
