Inspection Procedure

HINT:

When using the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool, start the inspection from step 1 and when of not using the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool, start from step 2.

  1. Connect hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool, and check park/neutral position switch signal. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Warm up the engine.
    2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
    3. Connect the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
    4. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    5. Turn ON the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool.
    6. When using the hand-held tester:

      Enter the following menus: DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/DATA LIST

    7. According to the display on the tester, read the "DATA LIST".

    CHECK: 

    Read the park/neutral position switch signal.

    OK:

    1. OK: Check for intermittent problem (see  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ). 
    2. NG: Go To Next Step 
  2. Check park/neutral position switch. 

    PREPARATION: 

    Remove the park/neutral position switch.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the resistance between the switch terminals when operating the shift lever, as shown in the table below.

    OK:

    1. NG: Replace park/neutral position switch (see  PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  ). 
    2. OK: Go To Next Step 
  3. Check harness and connector between ECM and park/neutral position switch. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between each terminal and body ground when the shift lever is moved into each position.

    OK: 

    1. 5VZ-FE

    1. NG: Repair or replace harness and connector (see  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ). 
    2. OK: Check and replace ECM (see  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE  ).
