Inspection Procedure

Hand held tester: 

  1. CHECK OPERATION OF STOP LAMP 
    1. Check whether the stop lamps turn on and off normally when the brake pedal is depressed and released.

    OK: Stop lamps turn ON when brake pedal is depressed. 

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH CIRCUIT 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  2. INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Remove the stop lamp switch assembly.
    2. Check the resistance.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Switch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      Switch pin free 1-2 Below 1Ω
      Switch pin free 3-4 10 kΩ or higher
      Switch pin pushed in 1-2 10 kΩ or higher
      Switch pin pushed in 3-4 Below 1Ω
    3. Reinstall the stop lamp switch assembly.

    NG: REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  3. READ VALUE USING HAND HELD TESTER (STP SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect a hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/DATA LIST/ALL/STOP LIGHT SW.
    4. Check the STP signal when the brake pedal is depressed and released.

    OK: 

    BRAKE PEDAL OPERATIONS SPECIFIED CONDITION

    Brake Pedal Operations Specified Conditions
    Depressed STP signal ON
    Released STP signal OFF

    OK:  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  ) 

    NG: Go to next step. 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STOP LAMP SWITCH - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the S7 stop lamp switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the E5 ECM connector.
    3. Check the resistance.

      Standard (Check for open): 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITION (FOR OPEN)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      Stop lamp switch (S7-1) - STP (E5-19) Below 1Ω
    4. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    5. Reconnect the stop lamp switch connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: REPLACE ECM (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 

OBD II scan tool (excluding the hand-held tester): 

  1. CHECK OPERATION OF STOP LAMP 
    1. Check whether the stop lamps turn on and off normally when the brake pedal is depressed and released.

      OK: Stop lamps turn ON when brake pedal is depressed. 

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH CIRCUIT 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  2. INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Remove the stop lamp switch assembly.
    2. Check the resistance.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITION (1 OF 2)

      Switch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      Switch pin free 1-2 Below 1Ω
      Switch pin free 3-4 10 kΩ or higher
      Switch pin pushed in 1-2 10 kΩ or higher
      Switch pin pushed in 3-4 Below 1Ω
    3. Reinstall the stop lamp switch assembly.

    NG: REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  3. INSPECT ECM (STP VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E4 and E5 ECM connectors.

    Standard: 

    TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITION (2 OF 2)

    Tester Connections Brake Pedal Operations Specified Conditions
    STP (E5-19) - E1 (E4-7) Depressed Between 7.5V and 14V
    STP (E5-19) - E1 (E4-7) Released Below 1.5 V

    NG: Go to step   4 

    OK:  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  ) 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STOP LAMP SWITCH - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the S7 stop lamp switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the E5 ECM connector.
    3. Check the resistance.

      Standard (Check for open): 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED CONDITION (FOR OPEN)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      Stop lamp switch (S7-1) - STP (E5-19) Below 1Ω
    4. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    5. Reconnect the stop lamp switch connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: REPLACE ECM (See  REPLACEMENT  )
