Automatic Transaxle Unit: Inspection

  1. INSPECT INPUT SHAFT ENDPLAY 
    1. Measure the end play in the axial direction.

      End play: 0.37 to 1.29 mm (0.014 to 0.0508 in.) 

      If the end play is not as specified, select and replace the thrust needle roller bearing.

  2. INSPECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a dial indicator, measure the rickey of intermediate shaft.

      Standard clearance: 0.204 to 0.966 mm (0.008 to 0.038 in.)

  3. REMOVE 2ND COAST AND OVERDRIVE BRAKE DISC 
    1. Check to see if the sliding surface of the disc, plate and flange are worn or burnt.

      If necessary, replace them.

      HINT:

      • If the lining of he disc is peeling off or discolored, or even if a part of the printed number is defaced, replace all discs.
      • Before assembling new discs, soak them in ATF for at least 15 minutes.

  4. INSPECT 2ND BRAKE DISC 
    1. Check to see it the sliding surface of the disc, plate and flange are worn or burnt.

      If necessary, replace them.

      HINT:

      • If the lining of the disc is peeling off or discolored or even if a part of the printed mark is defaced, replace all discs.
      • Before assembly new discs, soak them in ATF for at least 15 minutes.

  5. INSPECT 1ST AND REVERSE BRAKE DISC

  6. INSPECT 1ST AND REVERSE BRAKE RETURN SPRING SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a vernier calipers, measure the free length of the spring together with the spring seat.

      Standard free length: 13.96 mm (0.5496 in.)

  7. INSPECT PACK CLEARANCE OF FIRST AND REVERSE BRAKE 
    1. Using SST and a dial indicator, measure the dimension "A" in the illustration while pressing the disc and plate from the rear side.

      SST 09350-36010 (09350-06110) 

      Pack clearance: 0.8 to 1.2 mm (0.032 to 0.047 in.) 

      HINT:

      Pack clearance = Dimension A - Flange thickness - Snap ring thickness

      Select flange thickness: mm (in.)

    2. Check that the 1st & reverse brake piston moves when applying compressed air (392 kPa, 4.0 kgf*cm2 , 57 psi) to the oil hole.
  8. INSPECT 1 WAY CLUTCH NO. 2 
    1. Check that the rear planetary gear assembly turns freely counterclockwise and locks clockwise.

  9. INSPECT PACK CLEARANCE OF SECOND BRAKE 
    1. Using a dial indicator, measure the 2nd brake pack clearance while applying and releasing compressed air (392 to 785 kPa, 4 to 8 kgf*cm2 , 57 to 114 psi).

      Pack clearance: 0.84 to 1.24 mm (0.033 to 0.049 in.) 

      HINT:

      Pack clearance = Dimension A - Selected flange thickness - Snap ring thickness.

      Select flange thickness: mm (in.)

  10. INSPECT 1WAY CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Hold the rear planetary sun gear and turn the 1 way clutch assembly. The 1 way clutch assembly should turn freely clockwise and should lock counterclockwise.

  11. INSPECT PACK CLEARANCE OF SECOND COAST AND OVER DRIVE BRAKE 
    1. As shown in the illustration, place a straight edge on the transaxle case and measure the distance between the 2nd coast & overdrive brake flange and straight edge using vernier calipers. (Dimension A)

    2. As shown in the illustration, place a straight edge on the overdrive brake piston and measure the distance between the transaxle rear cover and straight edge using vernier calipers. (Dimension B) Calculate the piston stroke value using the following formula. Select a flange which satisfies the piston stroke value and install it.

      Pack clearance: 2.09 to 2.49 mm (0.082 to 0.098 in.) 

      HINT:

      Pack clearance = Dimension "A" - Dimension "B" - Selected flange thickness.

      Select flange thickness: mm (in.)

  12. INSPECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the transaxle rear cover and 11 bolts.

      Torque: 24.5 N*m (250 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf)

    2. Using a dial indicator, measure the rickety of intermediate shaft.:

      Standard clearance: 0.204 to 0.966 mm (0.008 to 0.038 in.) 

    3. Remove the 11 bolts and transaxle rear cover.

  13. INSPECT INPUT SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Make sure that the input shaft assembly turns smoothly.
