Inspection Procedure

  1. CHECK OPERATION OF ENGINE CRANKING 
    1. When pushing the engine switch to start the engine, check if the starter motor starts.

    OK: PROCEED TO NEXT CIRCUIT INSPECTION SHOWN IN  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE 

    NG: Go to Next Step 

  2. CHECK DTC FOR PUSH BUTTON START 
    1. Check the DTC for push button start (See DTC CHECK / CLEAR ).
      CODE SPECIFICATION

      A Normal System Code
      B Malfunction Code

    B: REPLACE PUSH BUTTON START SYSTEM 

    A: Go to Next Step 

  3. READ VALUE OF INTELLIGENT TESTER (STA SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG. Read the values.

      Standard 

      STARTER SIGANAL VALUES

      STARTER SIG Ignition Switch Position
      OFF ON
      ON START

    OK:  Go to step  6

    NG: Go to Next Step 

  4. INSPECT ECM (STAR AND STSW VOLTAGE) 
    1. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the ECM connectors, while cranking the engine.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      STAR (B46-8) - E1 (B47-1) 9 to 14 V
      STSW (B47-12) - E1 (B47-1) 9 to 14 V

      Result 

      RESULT CHART

    B: REPLACE ECM 

    C:  Go to step  10

    A: Go to Next Step 

  5. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch.
      1. Disconnect the PNP switch connector.
      2. Measure the resistance when the transmission gear selector lever is moved to each position.

        Standard resistance 

        TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

        Gear Selector Lever Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
        P 2 - 6, 4 - 5 Below 1 Ω
        R 1 - 2 Below 1 Ω
        N 2 - 9, 4 - 5 Below 1 Ω
        D 2 - 7 Below 1 Ω
        2 2 - 3 Below 1 Ω
        L 2 - 8 Below 1 Ω
      3. Reconnect the PNP switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 

    OK: CHECK AND REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - ECM) 

  6. INSPECT STARTER RELAY 
    1. Remove the ST relay and ST CUT relay from the engine room R/B and J/B.
    2. Measure the ST relay resistance.

      Standard 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      3 - 5 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 Below 1 Ω (When battery voltage apply to terminals 1 and 2)
    3. Reinstall the ST relay and ST CUT relay.

    NG: REPLACE STARTER RELAY 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - ST RELAY) 
    1. Check the harness and connector between the park/neutral position switch, ST relay and ST CUT relay.
      1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
      2. Remove the ST relay and ST CUT relay from the engine room R/B and J/B.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard resistance (Check for open) 

        TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

        Tester Connections Specified Conditions
        Park/neutral position switch (B13-5) - Engine room R/B and J/B (ST relay terminal 1) Below 1 Ω
        Park/neutral position switch (B13-4) - Engine room R/B and J/B (ST CUT relay terminal 3) Below 1 Ω

        Standard resistance (Check for short) 

        TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

        Tester Connections Specified Conditions
        Park/neutral position switch (B13-5) or Engine room R/B and J/B (ST relay terminal 1) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
        Park/neutral position switch (B13-4) or Engine room R/B and J/B (ST CUT relay terminal 3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      4. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Check the harness and connector between the ST relay, ST CUT relay and body ground.
      1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard resistance (Check for open) 

        TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

        Tester Connections Specified Conditions
        Engine room R/B and J/B (ST relay terminal 2) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
        Engine room R/B and J/B (ST CUT relay terminal 2) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
      2. Reinstall the ST relay and ST CUT relay.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  8. INSPECT ENGINE ROOM RELAY BLOCK (ST RELAY VOLTAGE) 
    1. Remove the ST relay from the engine room R/B and J/B.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminal of the engine room R/B and J/B and body ground.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      Engine room R/B and J/B (ST relay terminal 5) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      1. Reinstall the ST relay.

    NG: CHECK AND REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - BATTERY) 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  9. INSPECT STARTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the starter assembly (See INSPECTION ).

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE STARTER ASSEMBLY 

    OK: CHECK AND REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - STARTER, STARTER-BATTERY) 

  10. CHECK FUSE (ST) 
    1. Check for continuity in the ST fuse.

      Standard: 

      Continuity

    NG: REPLACE FL BLOCK 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  11. INSPECT PUSH START SWITCH 
    1. Inspect the push start switch (See INSPECTION ).

    NG: REPLACE PUSH START SWITCH 

    OK: REPLACE POWER SOURCE CONTROL ECU
