System Outline

The smart key system is a system to enable the driver, without using the key, to lock or unlock the doors, to unlatch the luggage compartment door and to start engine (Motor). The interactive communication ability of the electrical key allows the vehicle to recognize where the key is. All that the driver has to do is to have the key with them. If the battery in the electrical key happens to run out of battery, then the key can function as a normal key without the smart key system.

  1. Smart Door Unlock Function

When all the doors are locked, an oscillator on each door regularly sends signals which form detection areas outside the passenger cabin with a radius of about 0.7 to 1m from each door handle. After the detection area has been formed, and the driver enters the area carrying the electrical key, the key sends an ID code signal. The certification ECU receives the signal with the electrical key antenna and identifies the ID code. After identifying the ID code, the doors in the area are put into unlock stand-by mode. At this time, the sensors installed in door handles activate. Touching the inside of the activated door handles unlocks the door locks, lights up hazard lamps and sounds the wireless door lock buzzer. If no door is opened within 30 seconds of the door lock being unlocked, the doors will be locked again.

  2. Smart Door Lock Function

If the driver gets out of the vehicle carrying the electrical key and pushes the lock SW on the door handle, then when all doors are being locked, the certification ECU sends a signal both inside and outside the passenger room to confirm the location of the electrical key. If the key is confirmed to be outside the vehicle and not inside it, then the doors will be locked. Additionally the door ajar alarm will sound whenever a door is not shut properly when the lock SW on one of the door handles is pushed.

  3. Smart Luggage Compartment Door Unlatch Function

If the driver stands in front of the luggage compartment door while carrying the electrical key and pushes the unlock SW on the luggage compartment door, the ID code of the electrical key is identified by the certification ECU through the luggage oscillator (Outer). After the ID code has been identified, the luggage compartment door will be unlocked. The luggage compartment door can then be unlatched by pushing the luggage compartment door opener SW.

  4. Smart Ignition (READY) Function

When the driver pushes the power SW while carrying the electrical key, the ID code of the electrical key is identified by the certification ECU using the room oscillator in the passenger cabin. After the ID code has been identified, the hybrid vehicle immobilizer is released and the electric power is set to ACC ON to enable the engine to be started. Pushing the power SW again sets power supply to IG ON and another push sets it to OFF. The switch state cycles through ACC ON to IG ON to OFF and back to ACC ON. The vehicle gets READY to drive when the driver pushes power SW while applying the brake pedal in any power supply state.

  5. Smart Alarm Function

    * If any door is opened and then shut while the shift handle is in the P position and the power SW is in a state other than OFF, the certification ECU attempts to identify the electric key ID code within the passenger room twice. If the first attempt fails, the buzzer in combination meter sounds (Once) and the wireless door lock buzzer sounds (Three times), and the smart warning light in the combination meter lights up. If power supply is turned OFF via the power SW or the electrical key identification is confirmed on the second attempt, the warning stops.

    * If all the doors are closed while the shift handle is in the P position and power SW is in a state other than OFF, then pushing the lock SW on any door handle activates the certification ECU to attempt to identify the location of the electric key inside and outside the passenger room. If the key is not detected inside the vehicle but is detected outside, then the wireless door lock buzzer will sound for two seconds and the doors will not lock.

    * If the driver side door is opened and then shut while the shift handle is in a position other than P and the power SW is in a state other than OFF, the certification ECU attempts to identify the electric key ID code within the passenger room twice. If the first attempt fails, the buzzer in the combination meter and the wireless door lock buzzer will sound continuously. The smart warning light in the combination meter will light up as well. Then, if the shift handle is put into the P position or the electrical key identification is confirmed on the second attempt, then the alarm stops. If the driver turns the electric power OFF using the power SW or the electrical key identification is confirmed on the second attempt, then the smart warning light will go off.

    * If doors other than the driver side door are opened and then shut while the shift handle is in a position other than P and the power SW is in a state other than OFF, the certification ECU attempts to identify the electric key ID code within the passenger room twice. If the first attempt fails, the buzzer in the combination meter will sound once and the wireless door lock buzzer will sound three times, and the smart warning light in the combination meter will light up. If the driver turns the electric power OFF using the power SW or the electrical key identification is confirmed on the second attempt, the warning will stop.

    * If lock SW on the door handle is pushed when all the doors are shut and the power SW is in the OFF state, the certification ECU attempts to identify the electric key ID code within the passenger room twice. If the electric key is detected within the vehicle, then the wireless door lock buzzer sounds for two seconds and the doors will not be locked.

    * If the power supply is turned OFF using the power SW after the "READY to drive" state has been maintained for about 20 minutes, the certification ECU attempts to identify the electric key ID code within the passenger room. If the ECU recognizes the code of a battery voltage decrease, the buzzer in the combination meter sounds once.

    * If the power SW is pushed ON, then the certification ECU attempts to identify the electric key ID code within the passenger room twice. If the first attempt fails, the buzzer in the combination meter will sound once and the smart warning light will light up for about five seconds. Then, the driver's power SW operation attempt will be cancelled.

  6. Smart Door Unlock Mode Change Function

If the lock button and PANIC button on the electrical key are pushed simultaneously and held down for about five seconds when the power SW is in the off state and the electrical key is not in the key holder, then the smart door unlock mode will change to all door unlock mode or to each door unlock mode (At the front passenger door, it only changes to all door unlock mode). The unlock modes will cycle if the process is repeated. The wireless door lock buzzer and the buzzer in combination meter will sound to notify about the mode change.

  7. Power Saving Function for Battery

If the electrical key does not send any signals for five days or longer, the interval between identification attempts is extended from 300 ms to 600 ms.

If the electrical key does not send any signals for 14 days or longer, or the key is in detection area outside of the vehicle for ten minutes or longer, then the smart function will stop operating. The smart function will resume under the following conditions.

    * When the lock and unlock signal for the wireless function of the key is received and the ID code is identified.

    * When the doors are locked with the lock SW ON.

    * When the doors are locked or unlocked with the door key SW.

  8. Manual Operation Function

The electrical key has lock, unlock, and PANIC buttons. It can be used manually to perform wireless door locking or unlocking. In which case, the operation is the same as a vehicle without a smart key system.

  9. Smart Illumination Function

When the driver enters one of the detection areas outside of the passenger room while carrying the electrical key and the ID code is identified, then the interior light, overhead J/B and key slot will light up for about 15 seconds.

  10. Smart Entry System Cancelled

The smart key system will be cancelled under the following conditions.

    * When the smart key system cancel SW is turned on.

    * When the electrical key is inserted into the key slot.

    * When the battery in the electrical key is flat.
