Inspection Procedure

  1. CHECK CRANKING 
    1. When starting the engine, check whether the starter motor starts.

      OK: Engine is cranking. 

    OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 

    NG: Go to next step. 

  2. READ VALUE OF TECHSTREAM (STA SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    3. Turn the tester on.
    4. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Starter Signal.
    5. Check the result when the ignition switch is turned ON and when the engine is started.

      OK 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Display (STARTER SIG) Condition
      OFF Ignition switch ON
      ON Engine start

    OK:  Go to step  6

    NG: Go to next step. 

  3. CHECK ECM (STAR AND STSW VOLTAGE) 
    1. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the ECM connector and body ground while cranking the engine.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      NSW (E10-8) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
      STSW (E11-12) - Body ground 9 to 14 V

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

    B: REPLACE ECM 

    C:  Go to step  13

    A: Go to next step. 

  4. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch.
      1. Disconnect the P1 PNP switch connector.

      3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

        Standard resistance 

        RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

        Shift Position Tester Connection Specified Condition
        P 2 - 6, 4 - 5 Below 1 Ω
        R 1 - 2 Below 1 Ω
        N 2 - 9, 4 - 5 Below 1 Ω
        D 2 - 7 Below 1 Ω
        2 2 - 3 Below 1 Ω
        L 2 - 8 Below 1 Ω
      4. Reconnect the PNP switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH - PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH) 
    1. Disconnect the I15 ignition switch connector.

    3. Disconnect the P1 park/neutral position switch connector.
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (check for open) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      ST2 (I15-4) - P1-4 Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (check for short) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      ST2 (I15-4) or P1-4 - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    5. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.
    6. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH - PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH) 

    OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - ECM) 

  6. INSPECT ST RELAY 
    1. Remove the ST relay from the No. 3 relay block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      3 - 5 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 Below 1 Ω
      (Apply battery voltage between terminals 1 and 2)

    3. Reinstall the ST relay to the No. 3 relay block.

    NG: REPLACE ST RELAY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - ST RELAY) 
    1. Disconnect the P1 park/neutral position switch connector.

    3. Remove the ST relay from the No. 3 relay block.
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (check for open) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      P1-5-ST relay terminal (1) Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (check for short) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      P1-5 or ST relay terminal (1) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    5. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    6. Reinstall the ST relay to the No. 3 relay block.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - ST RELAY) 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - BODY GROUND) 
    1. Remove the ST relay from the No. 3 relay block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      ST relay terminal (2) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
    3. Reinstall the ST relay to the No. 3 relay block.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - BODY GROUND) 

    OK: Go to next step.

  9. CHECK ST RELAY (POWER SOURCE) 
    1. Remove the ST relay from the No. 3 relay block.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      ST relay terminal (5) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
    3. Reinstall the ST relay to the No. 3 relay block.

    OK:  Go to step  11

    NG: Go to next step. 

  10. INSPECT FUSIBLE LINK 
    1. Remove the fusible link block from the engine room junction block.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      Fusible link Below 1 Ω
    4. Reinstall the fusible link block to the engine room junction block.

    NG: REPLACE FUSIBLE LINK 

    OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (BATTERY - STARTER RELAY) 

  11. INSPECT STARTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the starter assembly (See DISASSEMBLY ).

    NG: REPLACE STARTER ASSEMBLY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  12. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - STARTER ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Remove the ST relay from the No. 3 relay block.
    2. Disconnect the S4 starter connector.

    4. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (check for open) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      ST relay terminal (3) - S4-1 Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (check for short) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      ST relay terminal (3) or S4-1 - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    5. Reconnect the starter connector.
    6. Reinstall the ST relay to the No. 3 relay block.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - STARTER ASSEMBLY) 

    OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (BATTERY - STARTER ASSEMBLY) 

  13. INSPECT FUSE (ST FUSE) 
    1. Remove the ST fuse from the fuse box.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      1 - 2 Below 1 Ω
    4. Reinstall the ST fuse.

    NG: REPLACE FUSE (ST FUSE) 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  14. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the I15 ignition switch connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Switch Condition Tester Connection Specified Condition
      LOCK All terminals 10 kΩ or higher
      ACC 1 - 3 Below 1 Ω
      ON 1 - 2, 1 - 3, 2 - 3, 5 - 6 Below 1 Ω
      START 4 - 5, 4 - 6, 5 - 6, 1 - 2 Below 1 Ω
    4. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  15. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the E11 ECM connector.
    2. Disconnect the I15 ignition switch connector.

    4. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (check for open) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      STSW (E11-12) - ST2 (I15-4) Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (check for short) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      STSW (E11-12) or ST2 (I15-4) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    6. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ECM - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY) 

    OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH - BATTERY)
